I have to say, first, I've been working with wood all my life 65 now and really haven't run into blotchy pine unless it was my sanding. I'd love to see a picture. If the strips were slash grain then maybe that's what is bothering you. How did you see this blotchy effect - with a water wet down? Usually pine is pretty grain free.

I have two strippers with pine decks and once sanded out they were almost white but after a while the varnish got darker and maybe the epoxy got a bit darker too. I know there's lots of sub-varities of woods and I don't doubt you - just curious.
