This is like canvas stretching for painters, or what I've been doing with heavy duty window screen (makes a great dog bed stretched across PVC)
Consider Canvas stretching pliers, Get the ones with the bump for leverage.
I've tried gripping the screen with pliers, clamps, etc... they either cut into the material or the material slips.
Canvas stretching pliers are pretty cheap on amazon, so it might be worth trying it.

All in all it looks like it might be a good method.
From making wooden window screens, it's important to keep the spline slot a consistent width.
