Skin-on-Frame: Repairing Canvas that was Coated with Oil Paint *PIC*

My daughter's kayak got a tear last year at SSTIKS. We patched it with Gorilla tape, and it held through the summer. I took the tape off today after buying more paint. I have more canvas, curved needles and thread, but the combination of the canvas and oil paint is brittle. I am wondering if sewing might do more damage. Would it be better to glue a patch on with some urethane glue? It is very close to the chine. Also it is so close to the bow that getting at it from the inside is next to impossible without cutting it open. Any ideas for the best way to repair this. It needs to be ready for transport to SSTIKS this coming Thursday.

Thanks in advance,
Mike
