Wow, the fabric softener thing is new to me. I would definitely be concerned over residue and how it would adversely affect adhesion. Interesting idea for non-epoxied applications. It would smell nice too!!

I mimmick Bill's response. Thin strips, pour hot water over them as you bend. You can alternate dark and light woods in the lamination for a nice effect.
