Paul, neat solution! I have done something similar by embedding a length of black parachute cord in epoxy, right at the edge of the hatch opening, so it sticks up into the gasket on the hatch. It seems to help, and it's pretty much damage-proof. I like your "packers," as they force the hatch to sit flush with the deck, which is the whole point of doing hatches this way in the first place. Nice!
