I agree that guy's final product was a bit of an odd combination of factors. I'm looking more for a shallow-V, non-rockered, 16-17ft canoe around 31" wide with fineness to the pointy side of average and straight sides or minor tumblehome as I think that combination will generate a canoe that makes travelling long distances across lakes (Ontario back country) easier. It may be a tad shaky but that's just practice and loading, the displacement may not be huge but my camp gear is extremely minimal, and it may make rivers a bit annoying but I expect to see few of those. I expect good tracking and speed with that combo.
With that in mind, IF I build by his freehand method (which many kayak builders seem to do) I'd have to modify his rib jig for a shallow-V.
I've found a lot of plans (even free ones), but nothing that QUITE matches my perhaps over-specific criteria. Either way, I'm happy with my tendency to overthink and then dive headlong despite warnings, so my question was really just about the building method.
Honestly, i'd rather build a fuselage (yost/kudzu) style, but I've not been happy with the extremely few plans of that type. (The parameters, that is, not the quality of design)
