I haven't even a remotely educated guess as to the weight savings, but yes, weight is a critical factor.

If you pay attention to material choice and scantlings, you could build a light strip solo canoe. Having a smooth interior that's easy to clean (and bail), a stiff hull, and a rugged boat are all positive things if you are far from home, IMO.

Is your plan to build a canoe (paddled kneeling or sitting on a seat) or a hybrid RobRoy-style boat where you sit in the bottom and use a kayak paddle?
