Hi Matt,
In the photo of the skeleton upright, the third frame from the bow (furthest away) is a half frame, only the bottom. I put this one in to support 8mm thick pine floorboards which go back to the 5th frame. You can just see the small pieces glued onto the frames to support the floorboards at the level of the top of the transverse part of each frame. The seat is near the 4th frame and its height is about half way up from the floorboards. I built the boat to paddle on the Loire River, see

for a week, where the photo was taken. My baggage was one NRS waterproof duffle plus a seabag for the tent and sleeping bag. I put the duffle across the boat in front of the half frame and it made a nice footrest. The seabag was placed behind me. There was plenty of room for more gear and the boat has the displacement to take more.

I don't think that the frames are in the way in an open canoe, but might be in a decked kayak.
