Mostly to create a watertight compartment (semi) in case you get swamped. Provides floatation. A further use is what Duane Strosaker found out. He was out in the ocean off California and got attacked by a great white shark. The shark bit right on the bulkhead and therefore did not create a big hole in the kayak. Duane was able to bail out the kayak from the smaller puncture holes and make it to shore. Don't leave shore without one.
