The question I have is: are magnets are forever? Do they get weaker over time?

I was like you in that my boats were always set up for a circumnavigation of Greenland, with VCP hatches etc. The truth is I sometimes get pounded by a wave but my taste for that insanity has stopped. I think the magnet idea is really interesting. I can't imagine a recessed cover being jarred loose. For me its a matter of waterproof integrity. You can certainly install more magnets if you feel its needed. I think Rob's way of putting a thin bead on the cover that digs into the gasket is paramount.
