I use very similar magnets (20mm x 3mm) and a spacing of around 6 or 7 centimeters (2 1/2" to 3"). This is overkill for keeping the hatch on (I can lift up the boat empty with the hatch pull) but about right for watertight sealing.

I use a ledge 25mm wide, that is the absolute minimum with 20mm magnets.

I find that peaked decks are much more prone to leakage, but I don't know why.
