I prefer the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, because to some extent I don't want to know. But I think 300 hours is about right. I track my expenses in Quicken, and I attach the work 'kayak' in the memo area so I can filter for that word and see how much I've spent. I'm up over $800, but that includes other non-expendables such as clamps (I probably spent $100 just on Quick-Grip, squeeze and C-clamps), a Skil-saw, etc. $500 is a good estimate for expendable materials.
