: ...or WANTS one. ;-)
The lightest/strongest boat possible is a worthy goal, but there is more to it than picking a wood thickness, glassing schedule and resin application technique. You can select each parameter accurately and still fail to achieve your goal. The tolerances required to achieve the "optimum" construction are much tighter than when building "good enough" and the consequences of failure are more severe.
Using "just enough" is fine as long as you get "enough" exactly right, too little wood, glass or resin will result in a substantially weaker boat. A little extra can also cause problems. A boat designed to flex evenly may fail due to one area which is too stiff. At best, too much material will make the boat heavier than you want.
It is certainly possible to overcome the obstacles in an optimized construction system, but you need to be more careful. Sure, it is not a big deal to be more careful, you just work more carefully. But, you need to realize that more care is required.
Proper selection of your materials is only the start. Every step in the process needs to be optimized. Your joints should be completely tight. The boat skin should be completely fair and the final thickness completely controlled. These are all things one might strive for anyway, and if so, you might as well optimized the strength/weight while your at it. But to argue about 1/16" in skin thickness without stressing the fine points of fitting together strips is pointless. In my opinion the thickness of the strips and glass should be the final thing you seek to optimize, not the first.
