53's not that bad. I use a lot of 4 oz. cloth especially on the deck. and always 6 os. on the hull with an additional 6 oz football shape on the bottom and some 6 oz. strips on the lower stems and keel. I also stopped using that heavy 9 oz. fiberglass tape that soaks up resin like a sponge and needs a lot of filling. I weigh in at around 45.

I've been picked up by waves and laid right on top of rocks and I paddle off and just cry a little bit about the scratches. I'll only compromize the glass any further if I'm building for racing etc.

Besides, the more you paddle, the more junk you start carrying in the kayak.
