What I have ideally in mind is a small compass, which can be mounted on an existing hull. I don't think that "sphere" needs to be bigger than 1-1.25". This should be still readable. The base should ideally provide an easy clip-on mechanism to either a base plate which is permanently mounted on the kayak or for those who don't want additional permanent fixtures, it should connect to the bungees on the front deck.

In terms of a pump, a small foot pump is desirable. If it is electric, I would recommend the the swich can be near the seat, which allows the kayak to be partially or fully emptied before trying a reentry.
