I found something that looks like the start of an idea for a pump.
A neighbor of mine is a surgical resident. He showed me a hand held, disposable, one-time use suction pump they use in the operating room.
Its built to use inside the body so its corrosion, salt and protien
impervious. The thing was tiny, probobly a pound but the through-put
was incredible.
This OR suction pump is completly self contained and is in a sealed
plastic casing, with some form of fancy chemistry battery inside.
(Guessing NiCAD) In any case, he has been using his around the house
for a variety of odd jobs for two years now and its not showing signs
of slowing down. He is getting a lot of work out of this "disposable"
Its an over designed, marvel for the environmwnt it works in.
THe question is can we modify it for a sea kayak? The bad thing is
this pump was designed as a throw-away. When the battery dies ya toss
it. Because to replace the battery you have to open the sealed case.
Another negative, is that medical equipment usually is pretty inflated
in cost. Still, my thought was the mechanics were right for a boating application. All that needs to be figured is how to modify so it will
accept a charge or take a replacement battery.
Right now my neighbor is out of surgical rotations but promised me to
get me a few used (but not too dirty ones) to play with this spring
when he gets back in the OR.
In the mean time, I thought I'd see if I could find a line on the
a manufacturer perhaps find some shop drawings.
Do we have any surgeons or medical equipment engineers out there
who know about these things? I'll let ya know what I find out.
Right now its just an idea (any one smell smoke) but if I can get
my hands on one or two of these beasts it might be possible to
rewicker them for boat builders.
watch yer top knots
