On the Linseed oil can it says they are compatible. It is a mineral spirit base.

I dont varnish over it; the other way 'round. I mix a small amount of varnish into the first coat of oil, and then thin with paint thinner on subsequent coats. Greg Stamer gets my credit for the idea. I think it is a little harder finish than oil alone. I imagine it would be compatible the other way around, but havent tried it. I'd wait at least a day, be sure the linseed is completely dry.
