: I actually think it gets at the heart of why we are building boats. If all I
: wanted to do was go paddling, I could plunk down some money and get a very
: nice performing boat. It would provide me with nearly all the paddling
: satisfaction I get from one of my own boats. I would lose the satisfaction
: of having built it myself, but most of that satisfaction come from the
: thought that what I built myself is beautiful.

: I suspect most of us are trying to make more than just a boat. The difference
: between what we want and the boat we can get at the local outfitter has a
: lot to do with art. What else can we call it?

I build boats because I can't afford to buy all the different boats I want.

I build boats because I can design the boat I want not someone else's idea of what a good boat is, stripped down to accommodate mass production.

I know I'll get better materials and do a better job building my own boat.

I enjoy building my boat of course. Every builder puts a lot of themselves into a boat. We personalize it. This is what’s lacking in mass production.

It's not art. You use the term so loosely to cover anything pretty. Craftsmanship has a very high meaning to me. It must not mean much to you since it is not enough to express the beauty of well made boat.

I have worked with and studied under, many fine artists and craftsmen.

NONE of them ever described anything they did as art.

The term "art" or "Art" as used relative to contemporary objects tends to be a value judgment placed by those with monetary interests.

Every artist I've known used the term "Art" to describe the outstanding historical objects that have molded and reflected our visual and cultural history.

Every artist I've know described what they did and what other contemporaries produced as "work".

All the best,
