I find it much easier to put on the coaming lip with the recessed deck. It reduces the amount of vertical bend. At the front of the cockpit, you need to bend the coaming lip in two directions without the recess, with the recess you only need to bend in one direction.

You can get this advantage by just making a small section of flat at each end. You do not need to do the whole cockpit.
