When I designed my double, I took the lines of my single and virtually "cut it in half". I'd decided what beam and length I wanted and simply extended the curves of the bottom planks to achieve the required dimensions. The cockpits were moved closer to the ends to keep them apart and stop paddle clash. I'd also run off a list of doubles that most nearly met the dimensions I was designing to also help check my ideas.

I have been very pleased with the results. However I did start with a good design and did design within certain parameters i.e. for light, female, front paddlers (lighter and prettier than me). Probably the former dimension was of greater importance to the kayak's performance than the later.

lengthen, don't simply scale.
