When I asked that question, the fellow said they use a buffing wheel. The business edge was indeed burnished as though it had been buffed. So the bevel must be down, like a chisel or jack plane.

Woodcraft will hone the tool prior to shipment for $2.99. If I bought one I would examine it closely and take photos of it before use, so as to duplicate the honing method.

Buffing an edged tool can be an adventure. The buffers I have seen come in two flavors, 3450 rpm and 1725. A 3450 with an 8" linen wheel has a surface speed of 24 inches/sec., so is nothing to be trifled with. Hold the piece just a little wrong and you will be flogged with it. A better idea here might be to chuck the tool up in a vise and use a leather strop impregnated with buffing compound.

BTW, Woodcraft also carries a related tool, the inshave, which differs in having a 4" dia. blade vs. 1-1/4" on the scorp. The one I saw at PT was about 2-1/2", which may explain why it was custom-made.
