I have one with ferrules and didnt like the added weight. I think maybe most of that is in the epoxy set inside the ferrule. I've just been cutting the spoons for the blades on the proper faces, one across the laminate and one with it. Works for me and is easy to do. I have a good scarf jig now and could feasibly make one in to peices and the put it together, but the results would be the same.

Very interesting. I'd use the thinnest laminate possible, it will twist easier. Perhaps plastic wire ties would make good little clamps? All the twist will have to go into the "handle" part of the shaft which isn't much length.
