Except that a golf ball with dimples does fly further then one with a smooth surface. I also remember in labs doing some experiments whereby frictional drag was reduced by using turbulance.

Even better, I found a nice link with non-techno terms and pretty graphics that explains it in a way that matches my recollections and understandings of the subject. Always like things that match me! :-)

PS, it is important the different results of dimples verses pimples. Protrusions do result in increased drag and shorter golfball flights. Dimples are what works. This rudder design works with dimpling essentially.
