I had no problem with the Pygmy method. I put waxed paper over the tape and squeegeed thru the wax paper. The result was a completely filled weave and no air bubbles. I then scraped with a cabinet scraper. The tape cant be seen on finished boat.

I think the weights are for keeping the panels aligned during the epoxy cure. If you dont use them (on first side at least) you risk a miss match of panels if some panels have warpage. The thing I found with Pygmy, Dont second guess John Lockwood's building methods. Every time I thought I could do it better, I got "BURNED". Just follow directions and you will have a beautiful boat.
