My guess is you are not soaking the cloth enough. Also, make sure you don't just stack weights on top of the mylar. The texture of the weights will be imbedded in the texture of the tape when it hardens. I put a smooth piece of wood under some bricks. This ensures no part of the soaked tape is left unweighted by imperfections in the weights.
