You sure there was any glue at all in those spindly chairs. Traditionally chairs were not glued at all they depended on wedges to hold them together. You will often see chairs "fixed" with carpenter's glue, but this is not a good application for such glues. If you need gap-filling, epoxy is better, but a well constructed chair should not have any gaps.
