If you do make this eroor, I'd expect that it's best to have the gaps inside the boat. If you hold a straightedge against the end of the space into which the strip will be fit, so that it sticks into and out of the boat, you can lay the strip right next to the place where it will go, and transfer the angle with a pencil.
