I'd be most curious about where you drilled in relation to the void itself. For remember, there is air in there and it will fight you. If you simply drilled a hole in the center of the void, I'm not surprised you had problems. If you drilled two holes at oposite edges of the void, and used one to squirt in and the other to vent, I'd expect that to go much easier. Also, if you're not too worried about the wood finish, you can cut out the voids surface skin and slather epoxy in with a spatula.
