Measuring is not as importat as how the boat acts - opinions by paddlers. A narrow boat will track stronger with the same rocker than a wider boat which may not because the wider boat rides higher in the water. I believe the Merganzer needs no skeg. I have a friend who has one you can contact him if you want.

Also rocker is not always symetrical - equal in front and back. Many times kayak designers have more in front so it will ride up over waves and less in the back so it has some tracking.

Generally you would drag a string line over the botton to get a general feel of how rockered the boat is. People who sell plans usually describe the traits of their boats but even that can be quite bias.

Best you can do for building is to post your boat choices on here and get some opinions from builders.
