I disagree.

When I designed the magnetic hatch in 1998, I tested my compass in relation to the
hatch. Yes, if you place the compass close to the magnets you will get deflection.

However, the magnetic fields drop off quickly and it's a simple matter to move the
compass away and mark the best location for the compass where it is unaffected.

I've found no effect on the compass 16" or more away from a magnetic hatch.
