I wouldn't say that it's ideal in every aspect, but follow the link to the hold-down system I came up with for my first kayak. The only problem that I've found is that I have to spray the rods w/ a quick shot of WD40 periodically to keep them from seizing in the brass bushings.

Watertight as can be with the 3/8" soft foam gasketing available at Wal-Mart this time of year.

I never did install the c-clips and springs like the page says. It was just extra weight. The entire system weighs in at a little over 1lb.
