I lower the hatch lip by 3/16 to 1/4 inch and then have a 1/4 in thick gasket to fill that space so that lid stay relatively flush. You want those magnets to be as close to each other to give full force. They will compress a simple neoprene gasket over time, but it is easy to replace the gasket.
