I used magnets on two boats. They both use similar size (1/8 x 1/2 in matching pairs) and spacing (4.5 to 5.5 inches). Learned a lot from the installation on the Return (see http://www.fastq.com/~jrschroeder/kayak9.htm) and did things differently on the King related to seating the seal and covering the magnets to protect them from corrosion. Next kayak may not have deck hatches at all!
