If you had follwed the link in that article you would have come to an even more interesting way to get a kayak moving. A water jet.

The kayaker in the video is named Shaun Baker, and for a moment I thought our Shawn had turned to the darkside and gone for ultimate power. As I read the blurb I thought "hey, another homebuilt kayak that Shawn has been keeping secret." But when I saw that it cost $10,000 I knew no one on this site has that kind of money to blow. Guess this is a different Shaun Baker.

If you google "shawn baker kayak" you also get hits for Shaun baker. (I get confused by the similarities--but not as much as when there was another poster on this board whose name was also Paul Jacobson)

home page for the jet kayak is: http://www.jetkayak.co.uk/splash.htm

home page for Shawn Baker is: http://www.geocities.com/shawnkayak/

home page for Shaun Baker: http://www.waterfallkayaker.com/

page for SAS, sponsor of Shaun Baker is: http://www.sas.com/offices/europe/uk/shaunbaker/

Here is the text of the blurb. go to the link for the video.

While it's not quite as high on the insanity meter as a jet-powered shopping cart, wheelchair, or port-a-potty, we still wouldn't want to go anywhere near Shaun Baker's self-made jet kayak, which he apparently decided to build after deeming the sport not dangerous enough. Costing about $10,000, the kayak packs a 45-horsepower engine and is steered simply using a regular kayak paddle. As you can see in the video after the break (from an episode of Top Gear), the kayak is also far from simply being a proof of concept, with it already having been pushed to the limit in a race -- against a Land Rover Tomcat 4x4, naturally.

Next I suppose there will be a solar-generated-hydrogen-fueled engine on a kayak.
