Leaving the molds in place would seem to preclude glassing the inside. Many boats are built this way, with two perpendicular orientations to the wooden structural members. Two examples are wood/canvas canoes and Adirondack guide boats.

I'm not sure that even closely spaced ribs/forms would be as effective as 'glass cloth at providing strength perpendicular to the strip direction.

A thought along the same lines: some commercial kayaks feature "ribs" of carbon fiber in their hull layup. This might be a path to explore in the quest for a strong and light surf ski.
