Yes and no. With polyester lines, you need to leave a bit of slack in order to be able to slide a paddle under the toggles. Once you tighten them, there's no slop in the system. With nylon or polypro, you could probably make the lines tighter to begin with and use the stretch to your advantage. I haven't tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. The only hard part is getting the lines tight in the first place. Tying knots inside a narrow boat with a small cockpit can be a real challenge at times.
