: Sounds like a good solution, exept don't cut a slot in the dowel. Just plane
: one side near the ends to make a flat spot. Glue the blade on to that
: face. This will be stronger and easier than a slot.

: Or else get a 2x4 and make a greenland paddle.

And try to watch the grain of the dowel so you can orient it with best strength to paddle face if possible. There's also a very good thread you could search for where Paul Jacobson describes making the "One Hour Paddle" from a 2x4.
