Tried that last night when I saw your response, Paul, but it didn't seem to have any noticeable impact. With a pair of magnets attracting one another (one in rim [call it "A"], one in cover [call it "B"]) the addition of a magnet outside the cover ["C"] opposing the flux of "B" doesn't seem to have any significant impact on the strength of the field between "A" and "B". Meanwhile, the spacing of the magnets on each cover varies (9 equally spaced on front and rear hatches, 6 equally spaced on the day hatch) so I would need to create special "keys" for each hatch.
Thanks for the suggestion - I did give it a try, but I think I'll stick with pull tabs from nylon ribbon attached under the lid.
