Strip: First Deck Strip

I've completed the hull on my Night Heron, and am having a difficult time understanding how that first strip of the deck is going to be made. I saw some other posts on this in the past, but they don't seem to address the problem I am confronted with. The strip lays flat at the bow, and as you move back it becomes verticle. How do you bevel that strip, so that you have a flat surface to glue to? I can twist and bend it into position, but for a foot or so there is a transition from the side of the strip to the edge.I'm using regular strips for the deck. I must be missing something. Thanks
