You are on the right track, use your hand plane and bevel the twist into the strip.

Figure out where on the boat the bevel needs to begin, mark it on both the strip and the boat, then begin removing the inside bottom edge of the strip to match the bevel required for the strip to lay flat against your forms. The angle of the bevel will increase the closer to the bow you get.

You can use scrap pieces to practice with until you get the angles right.

If the strip still won't conform, wet it down well and clamp it in place, let it dry then remove and glue.
