Strip: Take-apart bulkhead ?

Anyone ever tried (successfully or otherwise) a take-apart strip kayak ? I'm at the late planning stage of a 5.5m baidarka style design, and one of the things I would like to do would be to travel by air with it. If I split the hull at the forward bulkhead, I get sections of 2.25 and 3.25m, which I believe are small enough to go as hold baggage on scheduled flights. But is it a feasible proposition ? I'm interested to hear of any experience, particularly with regard to
a) how to do it
b) weight penalty
c) strength compromises
d) problems with alignment / surface finish - extra drag etc.

Let's re-evaluate the original premise
