Hi rb, I just slit the fabric with some cheap scissors when I can't get it perfectly smooth. Once the fabric is wet, it becomes obvious where the slits need to be. It leaves a ridge but that can be sanded/scraped away.

I've always avoided using solvents on the work. Word has it that most are recycled and contain contaminants that can react poorly (fisheye) with the resin.

I trim the glass proud of any tough areas and go back with a smaller strip cut on the bias (diagonally). It's easier to lay a bias strip later than to go back and fix wrinkled fabric.
