The coaming has a function, cutting it down would be a mistake. Round it over with sandpaper, glass as intructed. Coamings bear the weight of other boats during rescues. Don't forget to round off the interior edge where you'll be sliding against it as well to reduce the opportunity of boats being dragged across your lap wearing holes through a skirt over time.
