The timber for you paddle looks quite good.

The softwood used for building here is a type of Pine. It is quite light in colour but has big dark brown knots every foot or so. Very ugly and I doubt they would stand up to the forces put on a paddle - I'm sure one of those knots would snap in no time. Don't think I'd want a house built from it either.

I think the hardwood used here would be a challenge.

I'm going to have a look around today.
