Yesterday I tried varnishing outdoors.

My first thought was "I'm going to have a 17' piece of flypaper".

However, I know people with bright finished wooden boats do this
all the time. They have no other option. They're not going to pull a
large boat out of the water and put it under cover to varnish.

So I thought, "Give it a try and see what happens".

First, I know it must be after a rain to knock down ambient dust. So yesterday,
after a rain I set the boat out in the sun at 10 am and varnished.

I came back later and it worked great! I did have a very few bugs but nothing
like I had expected. I think with the strong sunlight the varnish surface hardened
very quickly so bugs were not a problem. And the varnish cured very fast sitting
in the sun.

I'd do it again. If you have a very dusty shop or have used your table saw the day
you want to varnish, doing it outdoors may keep your varnish from having that
skid proof look of being covered with millions of dust particles.

All the best,
Rob
