They could very well be the same species with different local names. Both are from the Populus genus.

Aspen has historically been shied away from for a lot of building uses due to its very high moisture content. If left to dry on its own after milling it warps and twists in all sorts of funky ways. But if it has been kiln dried and covered with epoxy it should work well.
