I agree with Etienne here - there is much more to the ocean size cockpit than just looking cool. To me it offers more comfort with a clean deck over your knees, instead of rim edges and support wings. You can move your legs around instead of being fixed in one position. Support for rolling is everywhere – not only at the knee supports. Better kayak control – low contact pressure over large areas, compared to keyhole rims with high contact pressure at small areas (knee-, feet-, hip- and back support). Easier to get a tight seal with a small rounded rim, than with the flatter parts of a keyhole. And as Etienne points out, you get the chart and compass closer. I also found (from frustrating experience) that the height and position of the knee supports in a keyhole cockpit are extremely critical – if not perfectly fitted to you they may interfere with layback rolls. Angled to be comfortable when sitting down they prevent lifting your butt from the seat to reach the aft deck. I missed a handroll recently when trying a Tiderace Xplore and wet exited with bruises on both thighs where the aft edge of the knee supports had cut in (with foot pegs further forward this probably wouldn´t have happened, but instead I would have lost a little kayak contact). No such problems with ocean cockpits.
