: Bill, I understand about not making the blade a tight fit in the slot - hence
: my question about sand between the axle and sides on Bryan's pic.

: Not sure I agree with you about the natural forces helping the skegs stay
: straight. Imagne paddling in a crosswind with Bryan's design, in a kayak
: where the skeg is helping to prevent weathercocking. There will be
: sideways pressure on the skeg. The centre of lateral resistance of the
: skeg is behind the axle. The axle is a tightish fit in the skeg box, the
: skeg isn't. So the skeg would want to pivot about the axle - and end up
: steering you into the wind, which is precisely what you are trying to
: avoid. Hence my questions...

: (Sure, it won't end up at much of an angle, but every little hinders.)

: As per other replies, I think using the bungee to counteract sideways
: movement has good benefits.

: cheers,

: dave

Hi Dave,

Fits that way on all the commercial boats I've had with skegs, on my NDK Greenlander too, not all that tight. Never noticed any ill effect paddling any of them. Perhaps it is steering me a degree or two the wrong way, don't think I can tell on the water though :)
