As Bill H noted, usually they are 1/4" thick.

I have not tried this method I am about to suggest. If you are using a circular saw to cut the strips, I would see if there was a way to SAFELY mount the saw upside down and use it more like a mini table saw. With the strips being so thin, I would want to think the operator would have better control by moving the wood through the blade rather than the saw through the wood. Hopefully someone else will correct me if I am totally off my rocker.
