Strip: Cockpit Coaming Lip

Hi,

I'm building up a laminated timber coaming lip for my stripper. I have some vague recollections that the lip should not project out at 90 degrees from the vertical riser. Is this true?

Also what should the finish thickness of the lip be? I'm assuming that a spray deck will grip a thinner lip better but a thicker lip would be stronger so it's a bit of a trade off.
